How to compare private-school records

Use the survey to build a shortlist, then verify current program, cost, approval, and fit with each school.

Use public data as a question generator.

The national baseline is the NCES 2021-22 Private School Survey and may not reflect current operation, admissions, tuition, enrollment, staffing, or programs. Matched Pennsylvania records use PDE's exact SY2526 roster classifications. Matched California records are separate 2025-26 affidavit filings; CDE inclusion is not evaluation, approval, endorsement, or accreditation. State records and survey-reported association memberships are not interchangeable with accreditation. Verify all decision-critical facts directly with the school and relevant authorities.

01

Check the survey vintage

Schools change enrollment, staffing, grades, and programs. Treat NCES fields as a comparable baseline and verify every decision-critical fact for the upcoming school year.

02

Do not confuse ratio with class size

Student-to-teacher ratio is total students divided by teacher FTE. It does not reveal the size of a particular class, aide coverage, course load, or specialist staffing.

03

Separate association from accreditation

Reported association membership is a survey response, not proof of accreditation or state approval. Verify current status with the named body and relevant state authority.

04

Read Pennsylvania classifications literally

Pennsylvania LEA Type labels are state roster classifications for SY2526. They are not accreditation, and the absence of a prior-year row is not treated as a formal closure.

05

Read California filings literally

A California affidavit record means the school appears in CDE's 2025-26 filing data. It is not state evaluation, approval, endorsement, accreditation, or an NCES identity determination.

06

Compare the full family cost and fit

Ask about tuition, mandatory fees, aid, transportation, calendar, class sizes, learning support, discipline, safeguarding, graduation outcomes, teacher turnover, and how the school serves the student’s specific needs.

Quick answers

Common interpretation mistakes

Are the records current admissions data?

No. They reflect the NCES 2021–22 survey.

Is association membership accreditation?

No. Verify accreditation separately.

Does a lower student-teacher ratio mean smaller classes?

Not necessarily; ratio and class size measure different things.
